I’m only posting these videos because I always wondered what happened to this guy. R & B singer Houston (Summers) had a hit singe, “I Like That” a few years back. Unfortunately, he later gouged his left eye out in an apparent suicide attempt. He pretty much disappeared after that. Based on these video, he still seems a bit unstable.Mental health in the Black community is part of my research. I really hope he’s getting the help he needs.

Poor poor Houston! I feel so awful for him and i really hope he gets the help, love and support he needs. Clearly this brother’s been raped and that’s what’s sent him mad, made him try to kill himself and inflict such an injury upon himself. Poor guy. Stop rape for EVERYONE MEN, WOMEN AND KIDS!!! You don’t know what he’s been through. He’s still a young cat, and it’s unfortunate that he’s had to deal with some mental issues. One of the best ways for mental health to improve in the black community is for its members to remove the stigma that comes from seeking help. Unfortunately, such an emphasis is placed on being resilient and strong (for men and women) that seeking help seems, to some, like weakness. In fact, it takes a strong person to admit they’re dealing with serious issues and to seek better health and a stronger life. Houston is in my prayers.

I think its admirable that he wants to bring attention to the negative culture of the prison system on our men. It takes a strong concious man to address it so openly and honestly in a society that doesnt the way it should. God bless him again with the strength and wisedom and heart to continue his work that will hopefully hundreads of thousands of young men and boys in our country from a harmful circumstance. Grace him with your power to be strong. For he will be of great need for our childrens and people’s future. Father God help him.

This brother is not and never was crazy. He comes from a religious background and most people that do and are truly for God do not last in the music industry. There is a reason DMX is constantly on the news and made out to be a crazy crackhead. There are reasons why certain artists are sky rocketed into dangerous levels of fame and others are not even when they are more talented. If you think that sodomy is not a real issue then think about the high HIV rate among African-American women and one of the major causes of it. Think of all the men who are “on the downlow” and the causes of that. It amazes me how people these days are so alright with the fact that prison rape happens at all. If it only occured every other day it could be happening to any male member of your family. It could be happening to someone who did not even commit the crime they are incarcerated for. Imagine being in prison 20 years for something you didn’t do, being subject to systematic gang rape and the breaking of your spirit, then being released with the assistance of Project Innocence and having all those horrible memories to take with you. We are to love everyone but the desensitization of people to homosexuality is sad these days. It is even becoming a trend and promoted in campaignes and entertainment. Lord Jesus, hurry back!

I feel terrible for this guy. The music industry just chewed him up and spit him out at the first sign of trouble. I agree that in most communities mental health is still a taboo topic, when it shouldn’t be. Mental illness transcends all racial and economic barriers. Substance abuse is something that typically goes hand in hand with mental issues as a way of coping. PCP no doubt has some profound phycological effects. But coming from someone that is experienced with smokin dust, you don’t just gouge your eye out and have a situation like that. This was a long time coming for him, it doesn’t matter if your 20 or 60 your brain will catch up with you. Just watching these videos is pretty sad. I don’t know what he’s gone though, but i’m sure it was bad. The fact he doesn’t seem to acknowledge that he needs help at all is very sad. I hope this dude gets some kind of help that works for him and gets him to where he needs to be. My prayers are with him to get some peace of mind.

I have to agree with The Man. First off as I watched these 2 videos I picked up instantly on the stress to get the topic of male rape across. Not just rape in the jails. It seems as though he himself might have been raped by one of the “fruit loops” in Hollywood that he mentioned, maybe a male within his record label that or within the music industry. Bottom line he is showing signs of PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. There are definitely some mental issues that might have stemmed from his trauma. For males it is hard to discuss rape, especially when they are overly particular about their manhood, and maybe this was his way of crying out for help. And to those who say that he was very into God and the music industry doesn’t like that image, it may be true and very unfortunate about the music industry, but a man of God would bring physical damage to his body, the temple that God asked us NOT to destroy!

I cant explain how watching this has distressed me!! I pray that he finds the strength to get the help that he deserves and quite obviously needs. I remember hearing about the suicide incident as i live in england where his eye gouging incident took place, everyone had heard about it and where being nowhere near sympathetic. As a black man you’re expected to be this strong individual who gives the help and support rather than askes for it. I just pray he gets help and hope that mental illness is treated with more respect as the mind is complex. And i really do believe he was raped and that being the cause of his mental illness and hopefully we can all support and push his message as im sure there are vast numbers of men and women who are going through exactly what he is.
