I know we’re only half way through the year, but does that mean its too early to name a “song of the year?” If not, then I nominate Atmosphere’s “Yesterday.” First of all, remove the lyrics and I can listen to the combination of that jook-joint blues piano and the bangin drums all day. But shit, the lyrics, wow! First time I heard the song, I stupidly thought it was about an ex girlfriend, until I heard the final line of course. Whether or not you’ve lost someone close to you, you should be able to relate to this song. Similar to Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s “T.R.O.Y.,” Yesterday” is a memorial song that allows me to reminisce on past times. I love songs that are able to stir up emotion and “Yesterday” is definitely one of those.

The final verse is definitely my fave. Sometimes in life we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget that there is a world outside of us.

And when you left, I didn’t see it comin’
I guess I slept, it ain’t like you was runnin’
You crept out the front door slow
And I was so self-absorbed I didn’t even know

Maybe its because I’m getting older, but lately I’ve made conscious attempts to be more appreciative of the people I have in my life. Its hard given how busy as hell I am with school and everything. I think Slug’s third verse sums up exactly why we need to be less self absorbed. People can leave right before yours eyes if you only focus them on yourself. Anyways, I think this song is amazing definitely one of Atmosphere’s best.

That was my Emo moment of the day.
